about

In June 2020, PBS 106.7FM in Melbourne partnered with the City of Yarra's Leaps and Bounds festival to ask a bunch of local songwriters to write and record a song about their favourite live music venue in the City of Yarra. I chose to write about the Rooks Return, a bar on Brunswick St in Fitzroy, where the band has been playing a weekly honky tonk residency since the beginning of 2018.

This track debuted on David Heard's PBS show, Acid Country, on Thursday 18 June 2020 in celebration of his 40 years on air. As part of the Leaps and Bounds festival, as has become tradition, Dave would otherwise have had a live broadcast with local performers playing live on the show. However, due to COVID-19, PBS chose to celebrate his milestone by having these songs written and played for the first time on the show.

lyrics

I wish that I was singing with my band
At the Rooks on a Thursday night.
Setting up at seven, dancers in at nine.
Watch them twirling, watch them spin
Watching song to song.
I wish that I could watch them dancing
Dancing all night long.

I wish that I was hanging with my buddies
At the Rooks on a Thursday night.
Blowing in at seven, still waiting round at nine.
Drinking slow and making friends
High fives down the bar.
I wish that I was still there waiting
And not care where they are.

I wish that I was going to a gig
At the Rooks on a Thursday night.
DJ mix at seven, country band at nine.
Chairs and tables pushed aside
Pedal steel cries loud.
I wish that I could hear them singing
And playing for that crowd.

I wish that I was honky tonkin
At the Rooks on a Thursday night.
Mel goes out at seven, Dave comes in at nine.
Drinking cans and telling jokes
Going round for round
Oh I wish that I was honky tonkin
I love that honky tonk sound.
Yeah I wish that I was honky tonkin
I love that honky tonk sound.
