An empty pack of cigarettes and two red swollen eyes.
Flying back to Melbourne underneath these cold, grey skies.
Engines crying, rain is falling heavy and I know why
There’s sixteen hours and I cannot forget all of her goodbyes.
I tried to pack away these memories, keep them out of sight
Thinking hard how I can keep them steady and alive.
So I just count them all the way, keep a tally in my mind.
There’s sixteen hours and I cannot forget all of her goodbyes.
The sight of her would make me want to wring my hands and cry
I close up tight and sit and feel the plane begin to rise.
When I think about her I can feel the pain inside.
There’s sixteen hours and I cannot forget all of her goodbyes.
If she was sitting here beside me she’d lean over me and sigh
She’d say “Hold your memories close and your memories will never die.”
So I just count them all the way, keep a tally in my mind.
There’s sixteen hours and I cannot forget all of her goodbyes.
I might as well be flying to the moon as any sky
Distance means everything because distance never lies.
I held her once, I kissed her, now I’m flying higher and higher.
There’s sixteen hours and I cannot forget all of her goodbyes.

The Sun Will Rise Again
03:08
|
|
||
The dancing’s stopped, the bar is still,
The waitress gone, but I’m still here.
She left me all alone, she left me crying.
But don’t I know it: the sun will rise again.
The band is packed, the mood is blue,
The people gone, but I’m still here.
She left me all alone, she left me crying.
But don’t I know it: the sun will rise again.
All the drinks are poured, the glasses shine,
All the mirror shows is a face like mine.
She left me all alone, she left me crying.
But don’t I know it: the sun will rise again.
The lights are dark, the traffic slow,
No-one’s eyes look here no more.
She left me all alone, she left me crying.
But don’t I know it: the sun will rise again.
Friends will say, she got you bad
You know the risks, now you’ve been had.
She left me all alone, she left me crying.
But don’t I know it: the sun will rise again.

A Little Soul
03:34
|
|
||
Leaves are falling, ground is cold
Neath my feet and in my soul
Tis the season to be lonesome, to be blue.
Every step is another path
Away from you and happiness.
Away from goodness, warmth and satisfaction.
Blessed am I to be a part of the season of distraction.
It takes away the memory of you.
But why would I remove it all, winter’s not my destination
Just a lonely heart looking for a little soul.
Through the day horizons pass
In the evening, clouds amass.
Tis the season for a cold precipitation.
And now sodden underfoot
I’ll take my heaving heart to nowhere.
Fare thee well my old preoccupation.
Blessed am I to be a part of the season of distraction.
It takes away the memory of you.
But why would I remove it all, winter’s not my destination
Just a lonely heart looking for a little soul.

I’m a fool to take your love on
Like a betting man takes odds.
The horse has thrown the rider
And now is lame, unshod.
I’m a fool to see your visit
As another new affair.
And I’m a fool to think that you still care.
I’m a fool to treat your love, dear
Like an infinite resource
If I sink that well a little more,
Perhaps I’ll find the source.
I’m lapping at this offering
Like a dog without its share
And I’m a fool to think that you still care.
I’m a fool I know, I understand
So now I’ll turn around
Only to find the faces there
All laughing in the crowd.
So I’ll not linger on your beauty,
Not dwell on you I swear
Cos I’m a fool to think that you still care.
I’m a fool to sit and wonder
Like a poet in the rain.
The romance is inside
And the earnestness’s a drain.
And even if the mystery appeals
To another one somewhere
I’m a fool to think that you still care.
I’m a fool to think that you still care.

Take Me Back In Time
03:41
|
|
||
My memories are fading and my time is running thin.
Is there a reason to cool my worried mind?
I got a ticket to the party but all my friends stay in.
If you can do it won’t you please take me back in time.
Saw a movie, heard a song, had a tear in my eye.
Felt the press of a hand from behind.
Took a walk in the sunshine then the sunshine turned to rain.
If you can do it won’t you please take me back in time.
Got a job and a loan and a place I can rest my mind.
Gonna ride this one way ticket down the line.
Took a walk in the sunshine then the sunshine turned to rain.
If you can do it won’t you please take me back in time.
Now it’s funny, makes me laugh that I’ve waited all my life
Searching for something I can’t find.
Now I’m walking in the sunshine and I’m walking in the rain.
If you can do it won’t you please take me back in time.
If you can do it won’t you please take me back in time.

Forever Close
03:28
|
|
||
Way out on the fringes of this sprawling highway city,
Out along the line of suburban rows.
A woman sits alone staring long and drinking coffee
Waiting for a man to take her home.
Hanging in the deep, dark corners of her fading memory
A promise sits and waits to be exposed
As a lie, perhaps, or in satisfaction of a story
Told to her a long, long time ago.
And he said, I’ll be back to see you in the morning sitting pretty
Here among your clutter and your clothes.
Time will come and time will pass and we’ll no longer worry
When I’m with you again, forever close.
Sitting down to breakfast she’s smoked half a pack already
To her mind comes a line of someone else’s prose:
“When you sit and wonder why you’ll find a little pain and a little beauty:
A thorn goes deep but it’s nothing without the rose.”
And he said, I’ll be back to see you in the morning sitting pretty
Here among your clutter and your clothes.
Time will come and time will pass and we’ll no longer worry
When I’m with you again, forever close.
And from her memory comes the image of a man but it is hazy.
Time is a destructive force, she knows.
Both she and he are fading from the present and her body
Is moving on from him and into focus.
And he said, I’ll be back to see you in the morning sitting pretty
Here among your clutter and your clothes.
Time will come and time will pass and we’ll no longer worry
When I’m with you again, forever close.

Records With Our Friends
03:39
|
|
||
They’re making coffee in the moonlight
Frying beans out the back.
Staying up real late
Telling jokes and talking crap.
Spinning records with an ear
For those early kinda songs.
Sometimes it sounds a little rough
And even a little wrong
An old cowboy song, a west coast jam
That tunes goes on and on.
And my friend grins hard and exhales smoke
Slaps his thigh and sings along.
Now everybody’s laughing
Laughing on and on.
Records in the winter
And the pleasure of the song.
Records in the winter;
Records in the spring;
Records in the summertime;
Records with our friends.
The music’s loud, fast, relentless,
The beat and rhythm strong.
There’s whiskey in our hearts and glasses
And whiskey in this song.
Someone shouts, you look around
Behind the heaving throng.
“A round for anyone who dances
A dance to this here song”.
And when the melody bounces
And the lyrics string along
The barman’s voice is interrupted
The waitress stays her tongue.
We don’t know where the boss is
About an hour ago by now.
From behind the bar he took a bottle
And disappeared in the night.
He won’t be back until tomorrow
Or even next weekend.
We’ll just stay up real late and listen
To records with our friends.
Records in the winter;
Records in the spring;
Records in the summertime;
Records with our friends.

A Tiny Grain Of Sand
03:23
|
|
||
Never mind the anguish
Never mind the loss
The sacrifice and hardship
All adds up to nought.
Think about the triumph
Put it on your mind.
Don’t you let it lose you
Don’t get left behind.
And once you see that speck
Of glitter and of gold
That moment you understand
How all the things in the world
Are made for this here second
Your precious shining grace
For everyone and everywhere
Lighting up your face.
And when that light is beaming
The beauty and the spark
Don’t get any brighter
As if there were no dark.
But just as sparkles sparkle
And beauty shines ablaze
The next moment there’s something
At the periphery of your gaze.
A dull sensation enters
In the frame of all success
And that instant dulls the senses
And the flame alight forgets.
At the peak of your achievement
A triumph in the wind
Don’t forget it’s all just
A tiny grain of sand.
Don’t forget it’s all just
A tiny grain of sand.

A Thousand Tears
03:16
|
|
||
It used to be I’d hold your hand and kiss you.
It used to be that you were always there.
So much time we’d never have to worry.
Now all I’ve left from you is a thousand tears.
A thousand tears to see me through the summer.
A thousand tears I’ll pay for all my prayers
That you and I will be again together.
All I’ve left from you is a thousand tears.
The days are long, the nights go on forever.
Loneliness and sorrow my only friends.
I think of you; my heart begins to whimper.
Cause all I’ve left from you is a thousand tears.
A thousand tears to see me through the summer.
A thousand tears I’ll pay for all my prayers
That you and I will be again together.
All I’ve left from you is a thousand tears.

Tom's Cafe
03:37
|
|
||
Nine years he’s been at it.
Burns on his hands.
Scars on his fingers
Where he almost severed them.
Every day now
Working hard to the bone.
He got a dream and a family
And won’t betray either one.
Says he’s going to get out now.
Gonna get free.
Got a plan for the future
Be the man he wants to be.
It’s a hard way for living,
80 hours in a week.
The heart of the kitchen
Of Tom’s cafe never sleeps.
But a man burns out faster
As the heat and pressure grow.
And he’s more important duties
Than his working will allow.
So he says he’s going to get out now.
Gonna get free.
Got a plan for the future
Be the man he wants to be.
He’s been working too hard now
Doing too many hours
On the back of these nine long years.
He’s getting older,
His kids growing and walking
And soon they’ll be hot on his heels.
Now I see him sitting
Guitar in his hand
Playing Robert Johnson
And Skip James to his sons.
Moving back to the country
Castlemaine or Chewton-way.
Maybe start another cafe:
He’s got bills he’s gotta pay.
But he says he’s going to get out now.
Gonna get free.
Got a plan for the future
Be the man

Wandering Man
04:33
|
|
||
Hanging around, cap in his hand
Bent at the knees, a pale supplicant.
It’s moments like these, a man begging hard
Eyes saying please but not from the heart.
Anybody else can see he’s a wandering man.
Where does he go? The high and the low.
The false in between, the old drama show.
Even when two or three reconcile
You give him an inch and he takes a mile.
Anybody else can see he’s a wandering man.
Out in the cold he sits at the bar
A hand on her waist and one on her heart.
Band playing loud, he takes her to dance.
Out on the floor and into a trance.
Yesterday’s low will never be known
Keeping it hid or underexposed.
He wrestles down deep a feeling unshown
Under his skin and soon is controlled.
Anybody else can see he’s a wandering man.
Out in the cold he sits at the bar
A hand on her waist and one on her heart.
Band playing loud, he takes her to dance.
Out on the floor and into a trance.
Time after time, no-one can know
Better than he how the dice will be thrown.
It’s moments like these, a man begging hard
Eyes saying please but not from the heart.
Anybody else can see he’s a wandering man.
